Myanmar Earthquake
The 7.7 Richter scale earthquake that struck central Myanmar on Friday 28 March has devastated the country and caused significant damage to neighbouring countries including China and Thailand. We at the BSI send our deepest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of all those affected.
Myanmar’s already fragile physical and healthcare infrastructure has been overwhelmed. Mandalay, the second largest city in Myanmar, close to the earthquake epicentre, suffered very significant damage with the majority of buildings either destroyed or uninhabitable. There is limited electricity and communication networks are compromised. Casualties are enormous with close to 2000 dead and many thousands injured – unfortunately, these numbers will rise significantly in the coming days. Hospitals are unable to cope and many of the injured are being treated in the open.
What can the dermatology community do? Wound care expertise and dressings are in short supply. The BSI has mobilised nursing assistance, and wound care protocols and videos are available for colleagues on the ground. We are asking industry for donations of dressings and wound care products including emollients and antibiotics.
If you want to help we recommend donations to the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) Myanmar earthquake appeal. The UK government will match pound for pound all donations from the public up to £5 million.
Burma Skincare Initiative
Our mission is to vastly improve dermatology – the treatment of skin disease – in Myanmar, a country that for decades has been ranked as one of the poorest healthcare systems in the world. We are achieving this through improving education, research and clinical services for the benefit of thousands of patients.
We appreciate your donation.
